Recently i was searching if i can install Android on my Nokia C6 device. It seems not possible today to do so. Reason what i know is each device has its own architecture and OS are tailored made to fit that. But will same limitation will exist in future?
Are these signs of mobile devices going PC way. Currently this seems to be far fetched idea. But as mobile devices computing power increases, more and more customers will do their daily work on their mobile devices. As this dependence will increase their demand for flexibility will increase. This demand will translate into standardized mobile devices much like PC. We will have standard architecture and compliance will increase. As the compliance increases, portability of these open source mobile OS will increase.
We can take it to next level too. Imagine you can choose how much RAM, ROM your mobile device will have or which processor you want to have. If that happens mobile devices will become a commodity and mobile companies will be more like hardware vendors.
Time is not far away when we will have truly open ecosystem for mobile devices.
